The house is designed to minimise energy use through high levels of insulation: 150mm Celotex in the floor, 250mm of polystyrene in the walls and 400mm of Rockwool in the roof. The structure is made from Thermalite blocks chosen because they are airtight, breathable, affordable and familiar to builders. Two Viessmann flat plate solar thermal collectors and the back-boiler in the wood-burning stove feed into a large (360 litre) thermal store to provide hot water and heating. The house also has underfloor heating and A rated double glazed timber and aluminium clad windows giving a cosy but light feel. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery has also been installed and there are registers in each room providing silent ventilation.

Natural materials also feature heavily in the house, all the visible timber in the house is green oak and only stone from the site was used as cladding. The house also boasts a huge 6500 litre rainwater tank, hidden behind a small medieval looking door, and is used for toilet flushing and the washing machine. Ali has also recently had a wooden garden room built, for writing and yoga. The house even has built-in accommodation for swifts.

Lessons learnt during the project included the benefits of sourcing materials locally. ‘We used perimeter wall insulation called Foamglas,’ explains Graham, ‘I had to order it from Holland and when I ran out a lorry drove from Belgium with one pack that I could fit in my car. That probably wasn’t the best option environmentally or economically.’
