Timber-clad eco self-build featuring air source heat pump and green roof.

‘In theory we are getting free energy – the feed in tariff from our solar panels covers the cost of the electricity we buy in’ explains Mark who designed this low carbon house.

Shaped in a triangle to sit on the odd sized site and nicknamed the ‘lego house’ initially because of its blue building blocks, the house has a polystyrene shell which is filled with concrete.

The wooden, aluminium clad windows are triple glazed. Underfloor heating powered by an air source heat pump runs for a few hours per day and a wood-burning stove provides heating in the evenings. ‘I became anal about energy’ admits Mark, ‘I monitor our use every day. Pam bought me a clipboard for my birthday!’ An ‘Eco Eye’ monitors how much the solar panels produce and how much electricity the house uses.

As with any project, things were learnt during the process. The air source heat pump sometimes ices up in winter and can go into negative efficiency. Some elements, particularly the hot water, were done ad hoc, not as a holistic system and so have had a few teething problems. Generally the building works well though, partner Pam adds ‘This house is so warm, I really feel the difference when I visit old houses now.’
