‘I can’t bear to throw away resources’ says Peter demonstrating the wall of his new compost toilet which is built of 100 or so green glass olive oil bottles.

The house’s additional garage space was also made using ‘95% reclaimed materials, from Freecycle and skips.’

Peter added ‘mega insulation’ to the attic with a foot of sheep’s wool. He also added DIY secondary glazing – screwing in an additional sheet of glass to most of the windows. The house has two wood-burning stoves and heating costs are reduced as the couple ‘only heat the rooms we’re in.’ Peter has also reduced energy through using a traditional larder in winter to keep food cool instead of a fridge. He also grows most of his own food and the garden boasts 18 fruit trees, a polytunnel and 4 chickens.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE

Energy generation: Solar PV (3.4 kw), solar thermal, wood-burners

Energy saving: Loft and floor insulation, low energy lighting, secondary glazing, pantry

Water saving: Compost toilet, water recycling

Waste: Composting, re-used materials such as glass to mark the edge of garden paths

Food: Vegetable and fruit growing, chickens for eggs and manure

Design: Double-glazed conservatory which maximises natural light, solar gain and provides a drying space for clothes in winter

Lifestyle: Peter and Annabelle generally cycle everywhere and avoid flying
