‘Our new skylights let in more light than the conservatory they replaced!’

Des and Stina’s rustic-modern (rustern?!) dining room replaced their old polycarbonate conservatory and despite half being below ground level, is surprisingly light and airy. The new space was designed by Graham Burgess using green oak pillar supports, super-insulation and timber-framed double glazing.

‘We used to need two radiators to heat the space’ explains Des, ‘now we only need one and it’s a much warmer more usable space.’ Tanking and insulation also removed the damp from the room. Des commissioned a double thickness wooden door to complete the feel of the room and to insure no heat escapes.

In the rest of the house there are two wood-burners and Des is gradually replacing all the windows with timber-framed double glazed sashes. Des and Stina also added internal insulation which required cleaning the walls of all previous paint before tanking then installing the insulating material. Despite the hassle Des says ‘it was clearly worth the trouble’.
