Matt has lived in his 1910 solid-stone semi for six years. When the family moved in, the home was badly insulated in both the walls and the loft, and winter bills were high to keep the house warm.

Their motivation for change was 50% climate change, 30% money and 20% comfort, and they drew on knowledge from his work as Climate Action Lead at Frome Town Council alongside advice from professionals.

Energy Efficiency Measures
  • Insulation: Ground-floor insulation fitted throughout, plus internal wall insulation in the extension.
  • Ventilation: New vents added to the extension to maintain air quality.
  • Heating: Gas boiler has been replaced with an air source heat pump.
  • Glazing: Double glazing.
  • Draught proofing: DIY draft excluders fitted.
  • Solar PV: was installed in 2026, with(10 kWh of battery storage.
  • Water conservation: A water butt in the garden.
  • Lifestyle/behaviour changes: all food waste is composted on site.
  • Annual Energy Consumption: Total energy consumption is around 3,520 kWh per year. The EPC rating was D.
  • Installers/Contractors: Building work was carried out by 345 Construction (Steven Lewis, Frome). The air source heat pump was installed via Thermly.
  • Learning: The family didn't realise they would need to change their radiators when they installed the heat pump — a reminder that heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, and existing radiators often need upsizing to compensate.
