The owners of this 2018 new-build semi have lived there for eight years. The property was built with insulated cavity walls and plenty of loft insulation so their only retrofit measure to date has been replacing the gas combi boiler.
Their motivations were 50% fossil-free heating, 30% cost and 20% comfort. The heat pump gives them satisfaction as the heating does not burn fossil fuels as well as more modern settings.
Energy Efficiency Measures
- Air Source Heat Pump: Gas combi boiler was replaced with an Octopus Cosy heat pump, installed in August 2025. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant meant that the new heat pump was cheaper than maintaining and running the older gas boiler.
- Smart Controls: Heating is managed through an app allowing the heating schedule to be optimised.
- Annual Energy Consumption: Approximately 5,400 kWh of electricity in the first year of use for the entire household, including heating.
- Installers: Octopus Energy installed the heat pump in August 2025. The installation took 3.5 days with manageable disruption. The whole installation process was professional from planning to execution, communication, and behaviour on site.
